Group Therapy
Recovery is harder alone
Group therapy is facilitated sessions where people in recovery share experiences, build connections and develop skills together. It is a core component of most outpatient treatment plans and runs at regular intervals throughout the week.
What is included
- Led by licensed or supervised clinicians
- Peer support and shared accountability
- Skill-building exercises and structured discussions
- A safe, judgment-free space to practice communication and coping
- Helps reduce isolation and build a recovery community
What actually happens in a group session
Most people dread the first one. The picture in your head is a circle of chairs and being made to confess. That is not what this is.
Sessions are structured and led by a clinician. There is usually a topic — managing a specific trigger, handling a family conversation, planning for a difficult date on the calendar. People contribute when they have something to say. You are not required to speak in your first session, and no one will put you on the spot.
What tends to surprise people is the relief of being in a room where nothing needs explaining. Addiction is isolating largely because of the effort of hiding it. Group is a few hours a week where that effort stops.
Confidentiality in group
What is said in group stays in group. That expectation is set explicitly at the start and it is a condition of participation, not a suggestion. Clinicians are bound by the same protections that apply to individual sessions.
Group and individual work together
They do different jobs. Individual therapy goes deep on your particular history. Group builds the social skills and support network that recovery runs on. Most treatment plans include both, alongside medication-assisted treatment where appropriate.
Paying for treatment
We accept West Virginia Medicaid, private insurance and self-pay. WV Medicaid requires prior authorization for most substance use disorder services — we complete that paperwork for you as part of intake.
